Biometric Reading in High-Temperature Environments: What is the Problem, What is the Solution?

Biometric access control systems usually work seamlessly in office environments. However, conditions change significantly when the worksite is an iron and steel plant, a glass production line, an open-air construction site, or a production area exceeding 40°C during the summer months.

High heat has a direct impact on both electronic hardware and fingerprint reading performance. Therefore, biometric systems used in hot environments must be approached differently than standard devices.

Why Does High Temperature Complicate Biometric Reading?

As the temperature rises, two fundamental problems emerge:

On the Hardware Side: Sensors are affected by heat, and reading sensitivity may decrease.

On the User Side: Sweating, excessive dryness, or deformations on the finger surface make it difficult for the fingerprint to be clearly detected.

This situation can cause authorized personnel to make repeated attempts at the turnstile or door, leading to a slowdown in operational flow.

Small but Critical Installation Details in the Field

Proper installation is just as important as the right device. In areas with high temperatures, the following steps significantly increase reading performance and device lifespan:

Ensuring the device does not receive direct sunlight,

Not mounting it in direct contact with metal surfaces (to avoid heat transfer),

Using a canopy or protective shield whenever possible.

Temperature is Not an Obstacle, It is a Condition to be Managed

High-temperature environments can be challenging for biometric systems; however, this situation can be easily managed with the right product and the right configuration.

At Barkodes, we produce and offer secure and uninterrupted access systems for various temperature conditions—from production areas to construction sites—using solutions that are suitable for industrial standards and truly work in the field.

To avoid leaving business continuity to weather conditions, simply choosing the right biometric solution for your environment is enough.

From Data to Vision: The Ideal Time & Attendance (T&A) Dashboard Design for Managers

Time is the most valuable resource for a business manager or HR executive. Endless pages of Excel sheets, raw entry-exit logs, or detailed reports often fail to provide quick answers to the questions a manager actually needs to ask:

"How many people are on site right now?"

"Where do we stand regarding this month’s overtime budget?"

"In which department is absenteeism increasing?"

The answers to these questions should be obtained by looking at a single screen, not by searching through reports.

At this point, Time & Attendance (T&A) dashboards designed specifically for managers leave the classic reporting approach behind and transform the system into a genuine management tool.

What Does a Good Manager Dashboard Provide?

There is a situation we frequently encounter in Barkodes projects: There is data—often too much of it... However, when not presented correctly, this data makes the manager's job harder rather than easier.

A well-designed dashboard:

Summarizes the data,

Prioritizes it,

And makes critical points visible without drowning the manager in detail.

In short, it functions like a cockpit screen showing the instant status of the business.

1. Real-Time Presence: Seeing the Field Status at a Glance The first thing a manager wants to see on a dashboard is clear: "Who is inside right now?"

This information is crucial not only for operations but also for occupational health and safety. Total staff count, department-based breakdown, and compliance with the shift plan are sufficient to understand the situation on the field.

In Barkodes T&A dashboards, this data is presented in an instant and filterable format, allowing the manager to manage the field remotely.

2. Reading Overtime Visually, Not Just Numerically Overtime is a cost item that often grows unnoticed. Therefore, visualized data is much more effective than numerical lists.

A manager wants to see:

Where are we compared to the budget allocated for this month?

Which departments are consistently working overtime?

Is this situation caused by a staffing need or process problems?

In Barkodes dashboards, overtime data is presented with heat maps and trend graphs, enabling the manager to ask the right questions.

3. Viewing Absenteeism and Leave via Trends Absenteeism data is not just the answer to the question "who didn't come?". The real value lies in noticing recurring habits and risk areas.

Planned leaves, unplanned absences, and frequent short-term medical reports should be monitored separately. This allows managers to take action before the problem escalates.

In the Barkodes infrastructure, this data is separated parametrically and presented simply on the dashboard.

4. Punctuality: A Small but Effective Metric Showing Culture Lateness, while seemingly minor, directly affects corporate culture. Seeing the personnel or departments that are most frequently late via the dashboard creates a significant difference in terms of discipline and planning.

Data such as average delay time helps re-evaluate many issues, from shuttle service hours to shift start times.

5. Device and System Health: Background Control A T&A system manages not only the personnel but also the devices in the field. Especially in multi-location structures; offline devices, increasing reading errors, or synchronization issues must be monitored instantly.
In Barkodes dashboards, this information is presented to allow technical teams to take action before a problem occurs.

Those Who Can Read Data, Lead For managers, a T&A system should not just be a tool showing entry-exit times. With the right dashboard design, it transforms into a powerful tool that fuels decision-making processes.

As Barkodes, we develop our solutions with dashboard designs that simplify data, facilitate the manager's work, and can be configured specifically for every business.

You make the decision; let us bring the data to support that decision in its clearest form.

The Hidden Cost of Staff Turnover: Does High Churn Strain Time & Attendance Systems?

In the world of Human Resources, Turnover Rate is mostly evaluated through recruitment costs, training processes, and operational continuity. However, for businesses with shift workers, multiple locations, and high personnel movement, this concept also has an equivalent on the Time & Attendance (T&A) side.

Here, an important distinction must be made clear: High personnel turnover does not systemically strain a well-constructed T&A infrastructure. However, if not managed correctly, it creates a serious operational workload on both the software and field sides.

This is exactly where the fundamental difference we see in Barkodes projects emerges.

It’s Not About Data Volume, It’s About Data Management

The performance of T&A software is not measured solely by how many personnel are defined in the system. The real determinants are:

How this data is stored,

How it is included in reporting,

And how active versus passive personnel are differentiated.

It is natural for a high-turnover facility to have new entries and exits every month. However, when the correct parametric structure is used, this situation does not negatively affect system performance.

In the Barkodes T&A architecture:

Terminated personnel are not automatically included in reports,

The active/passive distinction is managed parametrically,

HR reports run only based on the relevant period and active personnel.

Historical reporting and data access are provided whenever needed.

In this way, even if there are thousands of past users defined in the system, daily reporting and timesheet operations continue quickly and stably.

Where Does the Real Burden Occur? In Operational Workflows

The main impact created by high staff turnover is the operational management burden rather than system performance.

If processes are handled manually:

Opening a new registration for every new employee repeatedly,

Deleting terminated personnel one by one from different systems,

Tracking device updates manually...

These turn into a waste of time for HR and IT teams. This is where integration plays a critical role.

Eliminating Workload via Integration

In Barkodes projects, the basic principle for high-turnover businesses is this: The T&A system should not manage personnel; it should work integrated with the personnel management system (ERP/HR).

Therefore, in Barkodes solutions:

Personnel entry-exit information is automatically retrieved from ERP/HR systems.

Personnel with an entered termination date automatically drop to "passive" status on the T&A side.

Authorizations and device access rights are updated without manual intervention.

The same personnel data is not managed repeatedly across different systems.

Consequently, turnover continues, but the workload does not.

Security and Hygiene Management on the Device Side

Device management must also be configured correctly in fields with high personnel movement. In the Barkodes infrastructure:

Passive personnel are not kept in the device memory,

Unnecessary user data does not accumulate,

Card or biometric access is controlled centrally,

Risky scenarios like "passive in system but active on device" do not occur.

Thanks to this structure, a controllable and traceable access architecture is created, rather than security vulnerabilities.

The Problem is Not Turnover, It is Wrong Configuration

Personnel turnover is inevitable for many sectors. However, it is not a necessity for this situation to:

Slow down the T&A system,

Complicate reporting,

Or create security risks.

With the right management, right parametric structure, and right integration, T&A systems work smoothly even in businesses with high circulation.

As Barkodes, the T&A solutions we offer focus on reducing the workload along with maintaining system performance in businesses with high personnel movement.

Because a good T&A system must keep up with the speed of the business—it exists to facilitate it, not to slow it down.

Next-Generation Security in Web-Based T&A Software: Token-Based Session Management

Time & Attendance (T&A) systems were structured to work only in desktop environments for many years. However, with the increasing need for access from different locations and managers wanting to reach the system while out of the office, T&A solutions have evolved into a web-based structure. Today, Human Resources teams want to check timesheets, view shift reports, and manage leave approval processes via a browser while on the corporate network.

This ease of access brings a critical question: How safe is the data in our system?

Considering that T&A software processes the entry-exit records, salary information, and leave data of thousands of personnel, it is evident that classic session structures (session-cookie based models) fail to meet modern security needs. Therefore, Token-Based Authentication has become an important security standard in web-based T&A architecture. Additionally, alongside these standards, Barkodes T&A Systems operate on a closed circuit.

What is a Token? The "Temporary Access Card" of the Digital World

In classic web structures, when a user logs in, the server creates a session and stores it in its memory. In a structure with a large number of users, this approach causes performance degradation.

In the token model, when the user logs in, the system verifies their identity and generates an encrypted digital key. While performing operations in the system, the user is verified by sending this key to the server. Since the server does not have to keep the user in its memory, the process is both secure and lightweight.

Why Should Tokens Be Used in T&A Software?

1) High Performance and Efficiency Since session information is not stored on the server in the token architecture, accessing the system by a large number of users simultaneously does not create performance issues. The system works fluently even under load, especially during shift entry-exit times.

2) Web and Mobile Compatibility (Within Local Network) The token structure facilitates system access from both the web and mobile applications. While old cookie-based session methods create restrictions on the mobile side, the Token structure works platform-independently. This is a significant advantage for Barkodes' tablet/mobile usage scenarios.

3) Session Security and Data Protection Since tokens are created to be valid for a certain period, they provide strong protection against potential "session hijacking" attempts. With the Refresh Token approach, identity verification is securely renewed in the background as long as the user continues to perform operations.

How Does It Work?

The user logs into the web-based T&A panel.

The server verifies and generates an encrypted Token.

The user transmits the Token to the system while accessing reports, timesheets, or shift information.

If the Token is valid, the transaction is processed; if it has expired, the user is directed to log in again.

The entire process takes place within the company network, and data does not leave the external environment.

The Balance Between Speed and Security

In web-based T&A software, the architectural preference determines not only the screen design but also the infrastructure security.

In these systems, which host critical data such as personnel information, overtime data, and shift plans, Token-based verification provides businesses with a robust infrastructure by offering:

Faster session management,

A safer transaction structure within the local network,

Uninterrupted access during the management process,

Scalability without performance loss.

As Barkodes, we prioritize data security in the web-based T&A solutions we develop; we use the Token-based modern session structure as a standard within the local server architecture.

In this way, we provide institutions with a T&A infrastructure that offers flexible access opportunities without compromising security.

"Stainless" Does Not Mean "Maintenance-Free"

Turnstiles used in industrial facilities cannot be compared to systems operating in office entrances. Turnstiles serving at factory gates, construction sites, or production areas are constantly tested by dust, humidity, chemical vapors, and temperature changes, in addition to heavy human traffic.

At this point, there is a common misconception: "The body is stainless steel, it requires no maintenance."

However, stainless steel is durable only under the right conditions. When left unmaintained under industrial pollution, both visual and mechanical problems become inevitable over time.

Stainless Steel Body: Durable But Should Not Be Neglected

Stainless steel bodies used in turnstiles are resistant to corrosion thanks to the protective layer on their surfaces. However, this layer can lose its function over time due to salt in seaside locations, air pollution in city centers, or constant contact and dust in indoor areas.

Therefore:

Cleaning should be done with soft cloths,

The wiping process should be performed along the direction of the grain (satin finish),

Chlorine, acid, and abrasive products must be avoided.

Regular cleaning preserves both the appearance and the long-term durability of the turnstile.

Mechanical Components: Works Silently, But Tires the Most

Whether at an office entrance or a busy stadium passage, the internal mechanism bears the real load of the turnstile. Thousands of passes cause friction and dust accumulation over time.

In mechanisms where maintenance is neglected, passages become stiff, noisy operation begins, and user comfort decreases. Therefore, periodic cleaning and proper lubrication of mechanical parts are critical for trouble-free use.

Electronics and Power Components: Invisible But Critical

Turnstiles are not consisting of just metal and mechanics. Electronic cards, power supplies, and connection points also require regular checks for system continuity.

Especially loose connections caused by humidity in open areas, dust in closed areas, and heavy use can lead to electronic failures over time. Annual checks prevent unexpected downtime.

What Happens When Maintenance Is Not Performed?

Problems in unmaintained turnstiles usually start small: surface dulling, stiffness in passage, noisy operation... However, when these signs are ignored, mechanical wear accelerates, electronic components are strained, and the system life is shortened. Planned maintenance breaks this chain at the very beginning.

The Usage Area Changes, The Need for Maintenance Does Not

Whether used in open areas like marinas, in high-traffic spots like stadiums, or at office and campus entrances; turnstiles require regular maintenance. Stainless steel gets tired if left unmaintained, and the mechanical system becomes stiff if not lubricated.

As Barkodes, with the field experience we have gained in different sectors, we emphasize the importance of maintenance discipline that ensures turnstile systems operate securely, aesthetically, and smoothly for many years.

Correct maintenance protects not only the equipment but also business continuity and user experience.

Elevating Standards in High-Security Facilities: Integration of Card and Biometric Authentication

While security technologies evolve rapidly, the needs of facilities change in parallel. Today, especially in data centers, R&D laboratories, defense industry sites, stadium management offices, and multi-layered corporate structures, we see that single-factor authentication methods struggle to meet risks alone.

Card access control systems provide significant advantages for businesses in terms of speed, comfort, and manageability. However, in areas requiring critical security levels, relying on a single authentication factor brings risks such as card sharing, lost cards, identity transfer, and abuse of authority.

Similarly, systems based solely on biometric authentication can create additional burdens, particularly regarding Data Protection Regulations (GDPR/KVKK) and data storage sensitivities. Managing biometric data on a central server creates both operational complexity and can complicate legal processes.

At this precise point, the hybrid security structure combining Card + Fingerprint authentication comes into play. Combining the practicality of the card with the unique accuracy of biometrics, this approach takes access security in critical areas to a completely different level.

What is Dual Authentication and Why is it Rising?

Dual authentication (Two-Factor Authentication - 2FA) is a security approach that requires the use of two independent elements together to prove the user's identity. In the world of physical security, these two elements are usually defined as:

Something you have: Smart card (Mifare, Desfire, etc.)

Something you are: Fingerprint (biometric data)

In this model, after the card is scanned, the system verifies via fingerprint that the card is indeed being used by the right person. Thus, even if the card is lost, stolen, or shared, the possibility of unauthorized entry is minimized.

Why Not Just Card or Just Fingerprint?

Standalone fingerprint readers or standalone card readers are, of course, sufficient in certain scenarios. However, when it comes to "High Security," both methods can have their weak points individually:

Card Only: Cards can change hands. An employee can give their card to a friend to punch in for them ("buddy punching").

Fingerprint Only: Storing biometric data on a central server under Data Protection Regulations (GDPR/KVKK) requires serious legal procedures. Additionally, searching for a fingerprint among thousands on a server can slow down the process by milliseconds during peak entry hours.

Card and biometrics integration (especially technologies like BioPass Mifare Smart) eliminates both of these problems simultaneously.

Sectoral Applications: Where Does Dual Authentication Save Lives?

Card + biometrics integration has become a common need not only for high-security facilities but for all businesses where data, process, and personnel security are critical. The hybrid authentication structure used in Barkodes solutions ensures operational sustainability while strengthening access security.

Data Centers and IT Infrastructure Rooms: Physical access to servers is as vital as digital security. Using dual authentication in network infrastructure, rack rooms, and system rooms completely prevents unauthorized access. Access accuracy becomes measurable for IT teams.

R&D Laboratories and Production Facilities: Prototype development rooms, project labs, and production sites house the strategic knowledge of institutions. Using card + biometrics for access to these areas guarantees the protection of intellectual property and employee verification.

Defense Industry and Critical Industrial Facilities: In high-risk zones such as weapons manufacturing, aviation projects, energy infrastructures, and chemical production plants, multi-factor authentication is becoming a security standard. The possibility of unauthorized access is eliminated, and entry logs provide indisputable accuracy.

Hospitals, Laboratories, and Pharmaceutical Warehouses: Dual authentication in sterile areas, medical waste storage, operating room corridors, and narcotic drug rooms eliminates the possibility of staff identity transfer or card sharing. Thus, both patient safety and inventory management are kept under control.

Corporate Management Floors and Office Security: In areas such as Finance, HR, Archives, and contract rooms, information security is critical under data privacy laws. Hybrid authentication provides employee-based access tracking, minimizing the risk of data leakage.

Energy, Telecom, and Infrastructure Organizations: Electricity distribution centers, telecom base stations, water infrastructure facilities, and city management centers are critical areas both operationally and publicly. Card + biometric authentication is becoming standardized in these sectors.

GDPR Compliant Security: "Template on Card" Technology

One of the most critical issues in high-security facilities is how employee biometric data is stored. In traditional structures, this data is kept in device memory or on central servers. This approach can create additional risks for institutions regarding data management and legal obligations.

In next-generation solutions, the process has changed completely. With Template on Card technology, fingerprint data is not stored on the device or server, but is stored encrypted inside the user's own card.

The verification flow works as follows:

The user shows their card to the reader.

The device recognizes the card and requests biometric verification.

The scanned fingerprint is instantly compared with the encrypted data inside the card.

When a match is achieved, the door or turnstile opens.

Thanks to this method, biometric data is never recorded in a central database and is not transported over the network. Since the data resides directly on the card in the user's pocket, businesses obtain a structure that is both more secure and much more compliant with Data Protection obligations. The hybrid solutions offered by Barkodes support this architecture, ensuring the highest level of physical security alongside legal compliance.

Operational Efficiency and Ease of Integration

High security does not mean slowing down operational processes. Barkodes' dual authentication structures with card + biometrics integration perform verification in milliseconds, offering a fluid user experience even during heavy personnel traffic. This architecture, compatible with turnstile systems, speed gates, and elevator-controlled areas, increases security without disrupting the daily operational flow.

Furthermore, since Barkodes solutions can be easily integrated into existing access control infrastructures, businesses can raise their security level without having to replace the entire system. Thus, investment costs are reduced, and the existing system is modernized with a smart touch.

No Compromise on Security

The security of a facility is only as strong as its weakest link. While card access systems provide the basic security layer; additional authentication steps have now become mandatory for strategically important rooms, archives, system rooms, and critical operational areas.

The dual authentication architecture, where card technology combines with biometric verification, eliminates the possibility of unauthorized entry, makes personnel movements clearly traceable, and strengthens data security with its privacy-compliant structure.

If you want to reduce security risks in your facility, increase access accuracy, and carry your security architecture into the future, dual authentication solutions are the right starting point.

As Barkodes, we design the most suitable card + biometric architecture according to the needs of institutions in projects requiring high security and provide end-to-end implementation support.

We are by your side to secure your critical areas.
